I have never thought I would find a job so perfectly suited for my geekness. I'm a youth services librarian in a small rural library. I get to read books to children, do fun crafts, sing songs, do silly rhymes, perform finger-plays, play with puppets, talk with kids of all ages, play video games, dress up, take the teens to lunch, watch movies, go to the swimming pool, recommend books, and just share my knowledge and gain knowledge from those around me. It's a geek-worthy job and when my Zoology knowledge comes in handy it makes me geek-happy! What more could this scientist geek turned librarian geek want?

Our collection is very robust and fills in the many gaps that come with living in a small town. One example is that there are no independent films shown here, and our library does an excellent job of keeping us current with a steady stream of foreign and indy DVDs.

My library is the the best source for books and DVDs and magazines on two of the great loves of my life: cooking and crafts. At the library, I am able to find what seems like an endless supply of information and inspiration on these subjects. My library provides hundreds of books and movies on my favorite hobbies. I've always loved stories of all kinds, but lately I've been drawn to those writers and artists who use language in new and inventive ways. The library allows me to explore language in so many ways, whether it's by reading a fantasy novel full of invented words or a history of the English tongue. Being surrounded by books all day is great, but it takes a lot of self-control not to spend all my time browsing and reading for pleasure!

Reading is fun! It allows you to take trips to places you would otherwise never see and to do things you would otherwise never be able to do. I have gone on trips to medieval times and jousted with the other knights. I have flown through space and taken my first steps on the moon. Reading educates, entertains and eradicates boredom. Thank you, Charlotte Mecklenburg Libraries, for allowing us all the opportunity to read!

jonigeeksknitting
I geek knitting. Growing up in the Mid-west in the 1950s and1960s, I get the craziest looks from people when I tell them that I knit because it's relaxing. I've knitted since I was six years old. Being one of seven kids, Mom and I would sit in front of the fireplace as we knitted mittens, stocking caps, scarves, slippers and afghans. I, to this day, check in on new and different ideas, patterns, etc. for knitting, both from the computer and card catalog. One would be surprised at the ideas they would/could come up with.

margaretgeekstravelinginabookmobile
Author Tom Corwin had an idea and bought a Bookmobile that was being retired from the Newport Illinois Library. Northern Illinois librarians, as well as publishers from the American Library Association convention, had it stocked with books. Since July 2009, he has been recruiting authors to drive 'The Old Girl' and interview people about their Bookmobile memories while passing out books.
I happened to be there for his first interview with Ralph Eubanks at the ALA Convention last summer. Mr. Eubanks grew up in the 1950s in Mississippi, and the white driver and librarian brought the Bookmobile to his house deep in farm country when he could not use the library because he is black. He is currently an author and director of publishing for The Library of Congress.
The Bookmobile is currently in San Francisco preparing for a trip across the states from west to east.

When I was young, I hated having to read. Then one summer my mom signed up for a book club which featured biographies of the saints. maggiegeeksknitting
Part of the draw of knitting is that you can make almost anything once you learn. It's not hard to learn. There are only two stitches involved in knitting and the only tools that you really need are two sticks and some string. Once you learn, you can make blankets, rugs, headbands, sweaters, bags or socks. And these items can last for years. But there's the reality that you can make something from a single length of yarn that takes hours to create and, if you want, you could unravel an item just by untying a single knot.
It's the dual nature of knitting, complex and simple, sturdy and ephemeral, that makes it so fascinating and drives me to find out more about what other knitters make, how they make it, as well as the history of how knitting was created, used, and sustained by our ancestors.

laurageekscivicengagement&writing
My name is Laura and I geek civic engagement and writing. In addition to being a reference librarian I also have the task of providing programs for adults at our Central Library. As a member of Iowa Partners in Learning, a volunteer coalition which supports public deliberation in Iowa, I have had the opportunity to have National Issues Forums at the Central Library. One was on democracy and another on the healthcare system in which we partnered with the Hoover Presidential Library. In October 2008, I was a co-presenter at the NCDD (National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation) conference in Austin, Texas. Our presentation was on the importance of libraries in promoting civic engagement in our communities. This event generated interest from all over the United States.
Libraries are not just for books. They have become an important social aspect in our communities. When someone loses a job, they don’t have the money to pay for Internet service. The library is where many people are turning for job seeking online.
Not everyone is a reader. The library provides a wide variety of audio books. One of the programs I started at the library in collaboration with the Drake University Adult Literacy Center is called, “Literacy in a Different Way.” We bring readers and non-readers together to talk about books that may also be available as audio books. The idea is to encourage an interest in literature regardless of the format. One new reader was so excited she checked out the large print book and the unabridged audio book and followed along to help improve her reading skills. Working in a library is also a great atmosphere for someone who geeks learning. Another program that has attracted many people from the community is a free writers’ workshop which meets once a month. We average about 15-20 members each month. You could say I also geek being a librarian.
Laura is a librarian from Iowa.

theresageekslibrarians
During World War II my family of six lived in three rooms over a tavern across the street from the old Center Street Library. My mom was happy when I spent an hour or two there. It thinned the crowd.
Our librarian was a small woman who, for some reason, took an interest in me. (Give me a minute and I'll come up with her name. It starts with 'H.') When I got old enough to be an aide, I took it, but I failed the Dewey Decimal System test. Embarrassed? Well, yeah ... But my librarian loved me anyway. She never said a word.
I always make friends with my library's librarians. I've known quite a few. I will sit at his desk and yack or stand in the stacks and yack. (Don't tell the boss librarian).
My librarians and I talk philosophy, family, weather, but mostly books. One librarian told me he likes works comprised of complex sentences. We used to talk Strunk and White.
I like biographies that tell the tales of people who have transcended lousy childhoods. Oddly, I recommend more books to my librarians than the other way around. I don't recall any librarian who actually took my recommendation even though they took pains to write the title down. It might be the lousy childhood thing. But then who am I to say.
So many books. So little time.

jakegeeksbeatprose&poetry
When I was 13, I saw an episode of Freaks and Geeks where Lindsay and the slackers were assigned On the Road for their English class. The controversy caused by the book's subject matter alternative/outsider idealism and drug use during the episode led me to immediately go out and steal a copy. I was young then, and would never do such a thing now.
I read it cover to cover in three days, and would have finished sooner had the book not been taken away from me from the first day forth for reading during school hours, after being found hiding out in the bathroom for an hour desperately trying to finish part one of the book.
After that, I began going to my local library, where aside from Kerouac, I discovered Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso, William Carlos Williams, Richard Brautigan, Robert Creeley, and outsiders Leonard Cohen and Charles Bukowski. As well as my personal favorite, William S. Burroughs, whose complete published works I have read and now own. I still remember reading Naked Lunch in one day on a Saturday from 10 a.m. until right before close at Zablocki Library in Milwaukee.
It was only a few weeks later that I rode the bus by myself to the Milwaukee Art Museum, somewhere my parents or public school failed to take me. But ‘I had to see what these guys were talking about.’ I remember telling my mother who was furious and worried sick, but looking back I know I had made her proud because I was beginning to educate myself about things my parents were never taught or exposed to. In the end, my parents not only didn't ground me, but discussed with me the things I had seen during my 'big day out,' which was only the beginning of the travels that lay ahead of me, and which reaffirmed the wanderlust I had already begun to feel while reading On the Road in that old Catholic School toilet stall.
The Beats and their collective bodies of work have shaped my life in more ways than I could ever imagine, expanding my tastes in music, art, film and philosophy. And without the library to inspire me to be something greater and cultivate my passions, sensitivities, and eccentricities, I may have fallen prey to the negative lifestyles of my peers, and maintained the ignorance which has been a primary source in their failures to rise above their means, the hateful kind of ignorance which I can still sadly hear not only in their voices today, but now the voices of their children. However, they are still young, and I can tell already much wiser that my peers and I at that age. I just hope they are able to find their own passions, as I did, and learn while they are young that you will only get done what you do for yourself.

After attending my first Sun Dance In Hoosier National Forest, I finally felt where I belong. Since then I've been hooked to learn more about their way of life. Black Elk Speaks was the first book I read after I attended the Sun Dance and have read it ten times since.
I always new I was from native descent and in that moment realized I would pursue learning as much as I could about these new family members spirituality. I read most of the books from Shelby Counties Library and I knew there was more to reading the books than the knowledge obtained. I had to live it to make it real. Because wisdom without the knowledge of how to use it, is worthless. May Great Spirit keep my feet to the Red Road and the thirst of knowledge on my mind and wisdom to know how to live it. Traveling to other cities, states, and countries always opens my eyes to new experiences, customs and culture. It's amazing how no two places are the same, similar, but never the same. I am a full-time actress and a part-time secretary ... not truly, just in my mind. Why is it so hard to drag men to theatre, I can't know; my son only came with me to 'Rocky Horror' and loved it. Now he only comes to see me when I'm in a play. Community theatre is just as important as library communities.
Our local library system has 10 branches and only the economy of the last year has stopped us from continuous expansion. We have opera chorus and chamber music and little kid recitals, art clubs, and many author visits with snacks. We have a committed director and a swell staff.
Keep up the great job that you're doing to get the word out; that's the hardest point, getting the public to know what they have.

olingeekslife
Well, I have so many interests that I can be obessive about. It just all depends on the kind of mood I am in or a lot of the time it changes throughout the year. When it comes to the traditional 'geek,' I learned to troubleshoot and put computers together at a young age, ordering parts and assembling, etc. Also, I am very passionate about politics, history and I care a great deal about the outdoors. Studying environmental science and chemistry is a passion, and going camping and snowboarding/skateboarding is another.
When it comes to popular culture today, my brother and I watch more movies than what is probably healthy. Our group of friends also geek out bad on certain shows, mostly stick to the history channel and discovery, but also a lot of sports. Then other shows like Dexter and The Tonight Show mix in some the Daily Show and South Park , but nothing beats three-hour specials about Nostradamus ... lol. Cars is another big interest after spending a lot of time in Ft. Dodge for school as there wasn’t much else to do or talk about. Barrett-Jackson just had their yearly Scottsdale auto auction, that was a fun week.
Uh, maybe geeking life is a good statement? Sci-movies are probably my biggest passion and I'm getting a research paper going. Movies like Star Wars, A.I., Bladerunner, Donnie Darko and countless others all have solid storylines with background information that came from somewhere. I think the link from history onto the cinema is very appealing when it comes to writing and research that I want to do.

I love public libraries. I have moved several times to different states. The first thing I do is get a library card. Going to the library gets me in touch with the community, offers reading materials (books and magazines) that I don't have to buy, helps with research and offers programming for children through adults. In fact, while in Chicago my husband used the practicing rooms to play the piano, so we didn't have to buy a piano. It is the the perfect 'recycle, reuse' environment.

shelbygeeksnovels
Before I was three, I was interested in short books, and I have since devoured every book with a story I can lay my hands on, from graphic novels to full blown, encyclopedia-sized book series. I even have started to write my own novel. I'm mostly into sci-fi and fantasy, but a few realistic/historic fiction novels that have come my way have been pretty good.
However, I tend to stay away from 'realistic' highschool fiction, because I get enough real life drama from the few times I have to watch TV. I also pick certain authors, such as Cornelia Funke or Terry Goodkind, because they have such a captivating writing style. Well, this obviously has to do with the library. I don't know what I'd ever do if I couldn't go to the library. Actually, yes I do. That's how I started writing my own story, when Mom had enough with the library near my house that was underfunded, which made it scary.

Well, I believe it started in middle school. I was outside and heard a noise that really got me interested. I could hear motorcycles on the race track behind the school. From that day, I wanted to know what they were and how they worked.

sandygeeksorgantransplant
My 10-month-old grandson, born on Christmas Day 2008, had to have a heart transplant. After many doctor visits and tests from three to six months, he was dignosed with Dilated Cardiomyophathy. He was transported to Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. From June until September, my son and his wife lived in the hospital waiting for a donor heart.
On August 26, 2009, he received his heart transplant and is now able to live (with lots of anti-rejection medication). He is happy and thriving. We have received much love, prayers, and finanical donations. It is wonderful to know there are a lot of wonderful giving people in the United States.

I just had an older brother who was really into music, plus my mom and dad enjoyed music quite a bit, too. My older brother introduced me to classic and southern rock and later punk rock. But those eventually were not enough to quench my thirst and now I listen to at least a little of everything.
My favorite types are still alternative, punk, 70s and 80s, but I listen to big band/swing, musicals, oldies, soul, classic rock, southern rock, new wave, synth pop, reggae, folk, bluegrass, cajun/zydeco, celtic, african, world music, electronica, soundtracks/movie scores and a couple I probabIy forgot to mention!

My grandmother was a terrific gardener, and used lots of native and heritage plants in her gardens. I recently returned to the Midwest after 32 years away. I learned to love gardening during that time, but in a very different climate (USDA zones 7 & 8)! Now I am eagerly trying to learn how to garden in this challenging zone 4 environment. As I border some wild areas, I am trying to incorporate as many natives as possible, using 'sustainable gardening' methods, and am studying deer-proofing like mad! crystalgeekstheoutdoors
My parents kind of got me into the outdoors. I spend most of my time outside. If there was nothing to do, you’re more than likely to find me outside. I think the thing that I like about it is all the different colors and different things to see, and it’s entertaining. I think the outside is so beautiful. I would rather be outside then inside even if it’s cold or hot.
The outdoors effects my life because it’s practically my life. I’m outside almost every day and it irritates me on the days I can’t go outside. If I had to be stuck inside for a couple of days, I think I would go crazy.
In the future, I can see myself having a job that has to do with the outdoors, maybe taking pictures of the beautiful things of the outdoors. I think it would make me happy and I would really enjoy it. The best thing about the outdoors is sometimes its peaceful, and you can make the outdoors whatever you want with your imagination.

dehkonteegeekssongwriting
I geek songwriting. I love music. I like almost any kind of music with good lyrics and beats, that’s why I started to write my own songs when I was in the 7th grade. I have a journal of songs that I write and I try to think of the music that would go with the lyrics I write. But sometimes it’s very hard to do because I don’t know how to play any instruments and it`s very hard to imagine music when you don’t hear anything. That`s why I want to learn how to play the piano and guitar, so writing music would be much easier. That way I can come up with different tones and then I can write lyrics to them.
There are many singers and songwriters I like, but one of my favorite singer and songwriters is Beyoncé. She been one of my favorite artists for a very long time now, since I was in the third grade. The reason she's my favorite songwriter is because I like her music and the lyrics in her songs. Her songs are really inspiring and they make me want to write my own songs and music. I know most of her songs and she was one of the people that inspired me to start writing songs and making my own music.
One of my dreams is to become a singer or songwriter in the future so I can show people what I can do. The thing is, I don’t like performing my songs even though I know how to sing. It’s just that I get very shy in front of people when it comes to singing and then I forget the words I was going to say. And sometimes I don’t think that my music is that good, so I don’t want to perform it when people ask me to. That’s why I don’t know if I’m going to be a songwriter or singer in the future because I want to sing the songs that I write, but how am I going to do that when I get shy all the time when I want to sing and I don’t think my songs are good?
In any case, if I don’t get to sing my own songs I can become a producer and sell my songs to artist who want to buy them.

melvingeekshiphop
I geek hip hop. I started hip hop back when I was five years old. I really didn’t like it at first, but when I saw the people spin on their hands and heads it seemed pretty cool to do. I was impressed by the smoothness as they spun, so I started to dance.
At first I couldn’t really dance, all I would do was the running man and the robot. Now I start to spend more times with my cousin because we go to parties and we compete with other kids. We are always dancing. If it’s not at parties, it’s at downtown tournaments. We are always trying to make new moves and try to get better at head and hand spins so that one day we could have our very own dance crew and work with an artist.
One day we could be like the jabawakeeys and win dance battles and money. When I grow up, I want to be the person they call when they need a crew to dance in the back ground.

As a little girl, I spent many hours by my mother's side, watching her bake elaborate desserts, delicious cookies and holiday goodies for our family and loved ones. With an oven of my own, I've fueled those memories into a creative hobby and constantly seek out new books, magazines, and forums to learn more about baking as a pasttime and small business venture. One word to sum this all up: Yum!

maggiegeeksreading
I geek reading. I started to like reading when I started sixth grade. I didn’t really care about it until then. I started to read during the summer and got really into it. I started to read books bigger books and I read faster than I normally did. I read at any possible moment. Sometimes I'm not supposed to, but it really doesn’t stop me. I like reading because I get to hear somebody else’s story (real or not). I think I'm always going to like reading .
October 27, 2009
loryngeeksmusic
I geek music because it helped me in life. It helped me because I was going through a tough time and it was the thing I turned to. I love music because it’s a different and fun way to send a message. Another reason I love it is because it’s another form of art and a way to express yourself.
I mostly listen to punk, pogo punk, grunge, alternative, rock and classic rock. Some of my favorite bands are Tyborn Jig , Sum41, Blink 182, Dropkick Murphys, Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Led Zeppelin, The clash, Rancid, Nightmare of You, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Pennywise, NOFX, Bowling For Soup and a lot more!! I don’t really have a music idol, but one of my favorite people from the bands listed above would be my uncle who is the vocalist for Tyborn Jig.
I use it almost every day. I come home and listen to it while I’m doing homework, cleaning. I listen to it when I do almost anything. I am hoping to use music in the future by becoming a music producer and owning my own record company. I would love to have that job and help garage bands become known as the next big thing. That would be my dream job. It would also be a very hard job to get and so I would have to get a very good college education. So, that’s why I geek music .

I geek Stephenie Meyer. I started reading Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series when I was thirteen and I finished in one summer. They were so interesting. I fell in love with them.
It took me a while, but I finally finished reading the Twilight series. Now that I’m finished, I’m definitely going to read The Host. I see myself finishing The Host in the future. And, I also would like to meet Stephenie Meyers. Maybe even write a few vampire books myself, since vampires are every teens dream.

ashleygeeksanimals
I geek animals. I absolutely love animals; they're all just extremely beautiful! The thing I love most about them is their individuality. I say that because there are none that are exactly alike, whether it be their species, gender or color. The three animals I like the most are elephants, monkeys and pandas.
The interesting thing about elephants is that they can weigh more than 13,000 lbs. and can be 19-24 feet long. An interesting thing about monkeys is that their diet mostly consists of bananas and when they finish, they eat the peel! Some interesting things about pandas are that they are almost extinct and there are only about 1,000 of them left in the world!
Well, as you can see I love them, so I plan to be a veterinarian when I get older. The reason I want to be a vet and not a zookeeper is that I want to be able to help them when their sick and stuff like that. Animals make me happy, so just seeing one of them upset or sad makes me sick to my stomach. I also want to be someone who brings an end to animal abuse and animal testing.

Big eyes and long hair. All completely fake. No one looks like that. That is except if they happen to live at the public library. They are a form of adult cartoon rather like American animation except aimed at an older audience. Walking the dark, dank streets of London, I see Oliver Twist and The Dodger. I keep a close eye on them. When they've passed, I quickly check that my purse is still hanging from my arm. I am transported to distant lands and times by the masters of literature. Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Virginia Woolfe and the works of the ancient Greeks are a feast for the imagination. What a luxury it is to experience these great writers and their stories.

I love to research crime! My library recently had this huge book sale to raise money. I walked out with seven huge hardback books about crime or crime-related fiction novels. When I visited my sister at her college, I spent a lot of time in the 360 section of their library. (That's where there are books about crime.) When I'm older, I plan to become a forensic scientist, criminal psychoanalyst, or something like that.

melissageeksscreenwriting
My lifelong dream is to be a screenwriter/director. One of my earliest memories is of me putting on my new dress, black patent leather shoes, and white gloves and going to see Annie with my foster parents. It was a magical experience full of fancy costumes, elaborate sets and wonderfully choreographed musical numbers. I remember thinking, 'Wow! All of this excitement over a little orphan-girl whom the rest of the world had forgotten about.'
I realized that in movies, the possibilities are endless. A man can have scissors for hands, a group of rag-tag kids can find a pirates treasure, a little boy and an alien can be best friends. Super powers, monsters, heroes, villains, magic, loving families, dysfunctional families, shrunken families, faraway lands, the house next door, talking animals, deadly animals, time travel, vampires, and vampire slayers…endless.
I love how the shortest scene, a few lines of dialogue, or a score of music, can stick with you and carry with it so much excitement, sadness, terror or intrigue. Whether discovering an unlikely hero in Whale Rider or Forgetting Sarah Marshall after a long day of teaching middle school, I am always up for a good movie. I think the only thing better than watching a great movie, would be creating one.

My love for mysteries started in grade school with the Bobbsey Twins, quickly followed by the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series. As an adult, the Kirkendall Public Library supplies me with all the mysteries, thrillers and adventure books I could possible read. Reading expands my knowledge of history and of other parts of the world. Reading is fun and relaxing.

I've always been a library patron. My mom took me. When I moved to a new community, that's one of the first things I do–get my library card. When my children were little, the library saved my sanity. And during years when I didn't work, the library saved me money with books on how to make Christmas gifts. What is there not to like about the library and reading?

tracygeekspenguins
I have loved penguins for as long as I can remember. I believe it started with my favorite book when I was a kid—Lucky Mrs. Ticklefeather. Even though it was actually a puffin in the book, it led me to penguins. The second most memorable was Mr. Popper's Penguins. Funny how reading these books as a child led to a lifetime of love for penguins!

I began a serious personal study of photography one year ago. The library here in Statesboro, Georgia, made it possible for me to understand how the camera captures light and how to actually take breathtaking photographs...and lots of stuff in between. I am now working with floodlights and backdrops and folks ask me to do their portraits! The library was essential to my progress and fed my passion.

ajgeekshistory
As long as I can remember, I've loved looking at old atlases and encyclopedias reading about the past. Comparing this version to a more up-to-date version, deciphering the differences: why this country isn't there anymore, why that guy did what he did, etc. Then I came to college and my fascination exploded. World history and geography on every level. More classes than I could shake a stick at and professors willing to indulge my thirst for history. History didn't make me who I am today, but it helped me through the process.

sierrageeksmusic
Ever since I was a small child, I new that music was an amazing thing. My mom says I would spend hours on end as an infant listening to little nursery rhymes and playing with all my musical toys. I have been hooked on musicals since my grandma introduced them to me about 6 years ago. When she died last year, she left all her movies to me. Grease, The Music Man, Singing In the Rain, Hairspray... they're just some of my favorites.
In 5th grade, I joined band playing the flute and fell in love. I (now 13) have kept 1st chair ever since. I also took up piano lessons two years ago and my instructor is very impressed with my progress. I joined choir in 6th grade and am still favored as a leader of soprano by my instructor. I've been in every school musical with a solo. I cherish my voice very much. It is quite definately a gift from God. I've been given alot of complements about my singing and it makes me feel amazing.
I have recently found myself listening to music deeper than I ever have. I am a big fan of The Medic Droid. Their lyrics are really sincere and always get to me.They just make me think, 'Hey, this is what life is about, so we made a song about it.' Isn't that what it's all supposed to be about?
I can see myself sticking with music in the future. My mother has suggested becoming a professional floutist. I don't know if I would want to stick with that, but if all else fails, I can definately say that you will see me auditioning on American Idol or America's Got Talent. I want to share my love of music with the rest of the world. It's my passion. So watch out people, here I come.

trystangeeksknowledge
I have a thirst for knowledge that has been with me ever since I learned to read. Don't ask what subject because there are so many that I can't name them all. I learn from everyone and everything. New languages, new ways to do things, new reminders of things I might have forgotten or taken for granted.
My grandchildren remind me to go slow and enjoy life. A woman I meet at the corner bodega reminds me of how grateful I am to be able to take the next breath. My neighbor's dog reminds me of the unconditional love a dog has for its owner. I'm always reminded of things and always learning new things. I try to make sure that I learn at least one new thing every day. Time to go. I have so much to learn and so little time.

kelseygeekswriting
I've always loved writing…whether it was poems, short stories, autobiographies, etc. I've flip-flopped back-and-forth between what I want to do when I graduate high school. First it was a forensic specialist, then a medical examiner, then a chemist, but, deep down, my love of writing made me think twice about what I truly wanted to be when I got older. Now, I've finally decided that writing will always be my past, present and future.
I will always love writing, because it's such a big part of me. I can't begin to explain the incredible feeling I get when I pick up my pencil and unlock the writer. On more than once occasion, I don't finish writing what I start. It's a creative process and although I like the idea, sometimes it just doesn't stick.
One day I hope to become a published author. I want to write young adult fiction. I am a senior in high school right now. I graduate in May 2010. It is a very scary thought that twelve, rather short, years are coming to an indefinite close, but knowing that my love of writing is guiding my way helps me know what is on the other side of the proverbial bridge. The mere thought of going to college is intimidating, but going there and doing what I love most is a rewarding and satisfying thought that I keep plugged into my mind.

I've read and reread Frank Herbert's Dune series more times than I care to imagine. I'm a fantasy and science fiction geek. While I'm geeking on Michael Moorcock or Ursula K. LeGuin, my kids are in the children's section geeking on the rabbit that the librarians take care of or putting on puppet shows for the other patrons, or finding their own books in which to immerse themselves, such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

When I go through a hard time, I find a refuge in writing. It's my escape. Writing lets me vent and get all my feelings down on paper. jaydegeeksart
Ever since I was really little, I always loved to draw. I inherited this talent from my mom. She is wonderful. Of course being a little kid, I wasn't spectacular at it. But the talent was still there. I entered many art competitions. You know, the small ones they have for elementary school. Nothing special, just something to show off what I had. I won almost every time I entered. I was always very good for my age. Of course I know there were and are better people at it than me, but I never cared. I was just astounded that I carried this ability.
As I grew, many people had an interest in me. One in particular being Dell Seaman. He owned an art building called 'Artistic Hand' in Oviedo, Florida. He discovered me from one of those art competitions I had entered. People at the school I went to told me that he wanted to meet me. My mom and I drove down to the Artistic Hand to meet him. We weren’t exactly money healthy, so we were worried that I could not go to the lessons he taught. He was a very nice man. And he said he would mentor me and let me have lessons for free if I helped him clean his house/business. I agreed without hesitation. Dell had problems with his back and his health, so it was hard for him to do the simple cleaning that needed to be done. His wife was sick and she needed care from him, so I was more then willing to help him out. And not only because I was getting something in return, but simply because to help him out was a reward to me on its own.
I went to lessons there and cleaned for about a year. Then the tragic move happened. I cried for many days and dreaded having to say goodbye to my lifetime friends. I was scared that no one else out there would take the time to help me to pursue my talent. It was very hard to leave. I had lived there my whole life, but I had to suck it up and move on. We made our way to Virginia to live with my grandparents. I hated living in that house. It was so depressing there. Everything was so far away, and as a expected, there was not one soul there that knew what a great ability I had. No one stepped up to help me, so I had to do it on my own.
I got into drawing anime and cartoony things. I only ever draw in pencil, no color. Although people knew that I could draw well, they had no idea what I was capable of. I didn't even know. We lived there for about a year and then we moved once more, for the last time. And now here I am in Georgia. Moving here has opened my eyes, I have woken up. I am finally where I belong, I am happy
I live in Rincon, Georgia, in Effingham county. I am 14 years old and am an 8th grader at Ebeneser Middle School. Soon I will be going to Effingham County High School. My art teacher Mrs. Lott is the second person to step up and mentor me. I do most of my best work on my own, but she gives me helpful tips to work with. I am trying to expand my horizons. But the pencil is my companion. We are inseparable. I draw a variety of things, mostly from real life things, objects mostly. This is my second year living here and I hope there will be many more. I have been in the newspaper many times and hope to be famous one day. So, yes, I geek art, it's my passion. Forever.

Charles Schulz knew how to portray the common trials and tribulations of everyday life through the mouths of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Peppermint Patty, Schroeder, Rerun, Sally and Snoopy's thought balloons. Using a minimalist style in his drawing coupled with thorough research, Mr. Schulz changed the face and style of cartooning. He was and is someone we could all learn something from.
In fact, he gladly mentored any of the younger cartoonist who so desired. He was held in such high esteem by his colleagues that he won two Reubens (the Oscar of the cartooning field). Additionally, one Sunday in May 2000 most every cartoonist paid tribute in his/her Sunday 'funnies' by incorporating Mr. Schulz or one his characters in their cartoon.

(It has a crown if I'm in a good mood.) In my opinion, the top three most beautiful jellyfish are 3. Portuguese man-o-war 2. The Black Medusa, and 1. The Japanese Lantern. But all jellies are pretty jellies, and my passion for them will never cease. (I hope.)

kategeekstraining
I was never 'that girl' you know the popular ones, the cheerleaders, the prom queens, the valdedictorians. Not me. Never in the spotlight. Then, after many jobs where I continued to 'hide my light under a bushel' I became a librarian. That's when I found out there are things I know that others need to hear; that I need to speak up and share those things with the peole who need to hear what I have to say. I am important. I have value. And there are people who need me to help them do a better job...or to get a job...or to write a paper...or a myriad of other needs that I can fill. That's why I geek training. Every moment of everyday is a new challenge, a new opportunity to fill a need. At the end of the day, there's a lot of satisfaction for me, because I make a difference in other's lives. Libraries rule!!!

megangeekscamp
I have worked at a summer camp for the past five summers. They have been the best summers of my life! I can't imagine life without camp. It just wouldn't seem like my life. Camp helps me get away from everything and it takes me back to being a kid again. Being in college, you don't have many opportunities to just go play outside or make s'mores when you want to. I love summer camp and wouldn't trade my experiences for anything.

brittneygeeksusedbooks
The two places I have felt most home in were libraries and bookstores, more specifically used bookstores. Used books have stories of their own and I often find myself imagining what the previous owners of a certain book were like. What brings me joy to no end is picking up a book, opening the front cover and finding a note written there, usually to the owner from the person who gave them that book.

lukegeekspoetry
I hated poetry in high school; it was too abstract. But as I have matured a renewed interest has formed, and I have been going back over the great English and American poets. The public library provides me with a place to do this without going broke purchasing the books, and as a result, I write my own poetry with the help of all of these past poets I was able to have access to.

eringeeksarchitecture
I've always liked looking at how houses and buildings are designed. I think it is quite telling of historical periods and highlights cultural norms, and how they've changed over time. The library is a great place to learn about different types of styles and buildings, from skyscrapers to bungalows.

I didn't even realize this until one of my staff pegged me. She pointed out that I recommend books like Dr. Amen's Making a Good Brain Great, donated a Scrabble board to encourage young people to think more about words and numbers, and talk to others about engaging their brains in new activities. Neurology and keeping brains healthy has truly become my thing, even though I'm a librarian, not a doctor!

jamesgeeksrpg's
Ever since I was a kid, I loved to imagine and create fantastic scenery and settings on paper or canvas. I played my first role playing game at the age of ten and loved every minute of it. Being a noble knight or even a superhero, it wasn't the escapisim that was so fun, it was the fact that the outcome of every game was different depending on the choices I made. I write adventures for RPG's now and find that it can be a great way to get others to open up a part of themselves and remember the joy and fascination of being a kid just one more time while they play a character.

When I was 15, I was cast as Elizabeth Proctor in a local production of The Crucible. After that, I couldn't read enough about that time period, and later I fell in love with colonial American literature. I've taught American literature for 17 years and still love learning about that time period and reading the literature of that age, albeit mostly religious in tone or factual diaries.

ruthgeeksshorewalkers
I live in a richly populated and incomparable city. It is an enormous and evolving city that I love. Too much time away from the scent of earth and water and the natural world leaves me hungry to return and know what it is to be alive walking at the shoreline.
The gift of walks and hikes and saunters and meanderings takes me to the heart of living and I am only really whole while making foot prints of discovery. We would do well to seek ways to honor this shoreline world and further preserve it in our own best interests. It is our gift to share and cherish and understand.

sarahgeeksphsyics&creation&poetry
Have you ever seen how a lone raindrop after a storm meanders its way from the top of your car's windshield to the bottom, intermittently following the streaks of the windshield wipers as it goes? Down and over, down and over, down and over, arching its way to peaceful rest at the bottom.
Or have you ever seen the way the a thin layer of sand in an hourglass gets stuck on the walls as the rest of the sand dissolves its way from the top to the bottom? And a single light tap on the hourglass compels a few kernels of sand to begin to fall—each causing two below it to tumble on downward, and downward, and downward in a small avalanche, creating a triangle of negative space in its path?
That's why I geek physics. It makes God's creation poetically beautiful in the most subtle of ways.
August 26, 2009
kaitgeeksdarkroomphotography
Taking pictures just isn't the same anymore—now you never know if computers have changed what you are looking at. I love the dark room, where the film shows the raw human emotions and technology cannot change the truth. One snap of a camera and the memory is created and can never be altered. It's the most beautiful thing in the world.

lisageeksrats
I'd only ever owned hamsters, which are sweet, but this spring I ran across a picture of a rat that was available through our local animal rescue group. She had a very cute face, so I went to see the rat in person. I have to admit, I was a little put off by the tail aspect, but after I held her and realized that her tail is just skin with a very thin layer of coarse hair, I decided I could deal with it so I brought her home.
After that, I did some research and learned that rats shouldn't be kept as single pets, so we rescued another and now we have a pair of girl rats, Sophie and Roxie. They have turned out to be a couple of the best pets I could have hoped for. They're super smart, very sweet and lots of fun. I encourage other people to look beyond their stereotypes and try something new. I never thought I would be a rat owner, but I am completely proud of it.

I first became enamored with space exploration after seeing a rocket launch when I was around nine years old. I began researching more and more about it, from the early Mercury flights of Alan Shepard & John Glenn, up to the recent space shuttle missions. In 1986, my high school yearbook editor asked me to write an article about the Challenger disaster. I titled it "Tragedy in the Sky," and ended up giving presentations to the members of my class describing the accident. I still follow the shuttle program and I am eagerly awaiting the debut of the Constellation return-to-the-moon program beginning within the next couple of years.

dizzygirlgeeksjaneausten
From the time I was small girl growing up West Virginia, I've had a love for books. And that love can be attributed to Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice was one of the first books I read and I fell in love with it instantly, and it remains my all-time favorite novel. Jane Austen introduced me to the world of books, not just regency and romance, but to everything from Sylvia Plath to Stephen King. I've instilled the same love of books in my son, and even though he's only 11 and would rather read Captain Underpants to Persuasion, I'm passing along my love of the written word and support for our libraries, which are so vital.

I am the proud mother and teacher of four children. My children are the most important thing to me and I love to spend time with them. We love to learn at home. It allows us to spend hours with the things we geek most. My oldest child geeks organic gardening. My oldest son geeks collecting rocks and minerals. My five-year-old geeks Webkinz and my one-year-old geeks his mommy. We spend a lot of time at the library and would love to have a book group for homeschoolers started there. I am always looking for new opportunities to share with other homeschoolers.

For six years now I have been riding dirt bikes. I love it when you go so fast and you forget all the hurt in your life. I feel so free when I ride dirt bikes. Motorcross is a very intense sport and takes a lot of hard work and practice. I dream on becoming a motorcross racer.

I have always loved cryptozoology. It's not a very known subject, but ever since I was a child, I heard local and international stories about mythical creatures and simply became obsessed. I hope to someday become a cryptozoologist and I wish that eventually my friends and family will understand this.

I guess I am an all around geek. I teach science, so that is my main geekout: science-related stories, true or otherwise. But I also like to geek out on baseball, (certain) parts of history, and I am not ashamed to say, I have recently begun geeking out on Jane Austin's books, much to my wife's delight. Long live the geek!!

In order to understand your future, you have to understand your history. I love finding out about history, how people lived hundreds of years ago, and the rich cultural significance that started all those years ago.

kategeekspopandcountrymusic
Country music is a passion of mine. I listen to it most of the time. I have no natural music talent (either vocal or instrumental), so I have had to channel my passion into concerts and radio. Additionally, I love listening to cheesy pop music. My favorites are the boy bands from the 1990's and disco pop from the 1970s.

kaylageekspoetry
I love to write poetry. It is not just another type of expression to me. It is a way to show the ones that you care about how you feel, it is a way to cry without sheading a single tear, it is a way to fly without even standing up, and a way to just, I don't know, live. It is expression, but it is a lot more than that, too. I want to publish a book with all of my poetry in it. And that is my expression.

I have been in marching band for six years now at the high school and collegiate level. Despite the huge time commitment, it is the best decision I ever made. I love marching onto that field on gameday and playing my heart out in front of 30,000 fans. I was drum major for two years in high school and now I'm proud to be the mellophone section leader of the ISUCF' V' marching band.

I enjoy writing about interests both within and outside my community for the local newspaper and various magazines. I also enjoy writing blogs and posting interesting pics for others to enjoy. It's a pleasure having others approach me and comment favorably on articles I've written. I lean heavily toward writing positive articles, rather than critical or hateful articles. A positive outlook with confidence, that's my viewpoint!

hannahgeekstaekwondo
Ever since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated with those old kung fu movies. The ones with Bruce Lee. Other kids would be excited for a moment, but as soon as it was over, they would forget about it. Not me. I would run every moment, every movement, over and over in my head, trying to figure out how it worked, and how they could move their body that way. I began to imitate what I saw in my backyard. One day, my mother saw me do a complicated 360 butterfly kick, and she decided to sign me up for taekwondo. I have been practicing ever since.

I have always known I wanted to play volleyball, but I had never done it for one reason or another. After going to a camp this summer, I spent hours outside just feeling the satisfying smack on the volleyball, serving it against the garage door, setting it to myself, bumping it up and down. I love it and have come to realize that I geek volleyball.

victoriageeksinternationalrelations
I am a student of international relations so, I find myself having to search through lots of microfiche, government documents and peer review journals to find the information I need for my research projects. When I started High School, I use to love to take notes. I never did journalism though. I then just started to have ideas come to mind and I would start to write short stories. Then I started to write more and more. I got better and better. I then decided that I wanted to become the next best selling author for a young adult novel. I am now writing my book and hopefully soon when I graduate from college I will be able to publish it. So, I geek ceative witing, and I don't care what anyone has to say because that is my passion.

When I became a librarian I thought reading should only be traditional. Then I realized I have no time to keep up with my reading list. Audio books are the answer. I'm an education nerd! That's right, I love school! I love school such much, I am earning my masters degree to be a teacher. I spend hours upon hours in the library, studying, thinking, learning, laughing, crying and discovering! My passion is arts, and someday I will bridge the gap between the importance of core curriculum and the art programs. I truly see art, graphic design, music, theater, etc., as the best tool for cross-curricular education. Find a student's passion and they will learn through that passion...or, as we say on geekthelibrary.org, find out what a student geeks and they will geek learning too!

annegeeksquantumphysics
I’m horrible at math and could never pass for a physicist, but I love the concepts in Quantum Physics and reading about the theory. I especially love the theory of complementarities. Electrons behave as a wave or a particle based on what’s being measured. The observer becomes part of the experiment and outcomes can change based on the observer. It reminds us of how interconnected everything is and begs the question, who observed the first quantum event?
I also like the possibilities in the observer affecting the event; a person could hold sway over the outcome of a seemingly uncontrollable event. If the observer can enhance the probability of the quantum outcome, perhaps the observer can affect other things. Probability enhancement: it sounds like magic and science all in one. I like that. I feel bad for Schrödinger’s cat, though poor thing trapped in the box for so long.

emilygeeksnoise
I love noise! Whether it be music, the television, the ceiling fan, street noise or even my dog snoring, noise comforts me. Even now as I type this, I love the hum coming from my computer. I make my own noise by singing or playing guitar, piano, trumpet, French Horn, harmonica...anything I can get my hands on. I love loud noises like my motorcycle and soft noises like my air conditioner kicking on. I can find beauty in any noise. Quiet is boring!

I love to watch interesting, original, witty, and intelligent television shows. I'm a big fan of Doctor Who, Pushing Daisies, Torchwood, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I hate it when shows get canceled because they're too clever for the masses! It leaves the people interested in something that's not mindless slapstick up a creek without a paddle, because there's nothing to engage us! I mean, yes, that's what books are for, but sometimes I like to watch the telly, too. Smart people can do that, y'know.

sonyageeksw.w.lawbranchlibrary
W. W. Law Branch Library, in the "Heart" of Savannah, Georgia has been my love from the moment it was built over 30 years ago. As a child, I lived right across the street from the park in which the Book Mobile was located. I would spend all my time in that little moving library. When W. W. Law Neighborhood Center (which housed the library) was built in 1975, all of the children in the area were so excited. I was excited because I finally had a library that I can go to everyday. From being the first child to enter in the VRP Program to working as a Page, that branch has been my life. Now I am the Branch Manager of the very branch that I grew up in.

francia geekspoetry
I geek reading and writing poetry. I love poetry! It is an essential part of my life. It’s my lifeline, my therapy and what keeps me sane. I have been writing poetry off and on since I was a teenager. However, I’ve only been writing seriously for about two years. I enjoy all types of poetry from haiku to spoken word. I owe my love for the art of poetry to my mother. She started writing poetry in the 80’s as a hobby. She was so good at it that her friends and coworkers would often ask her to write personal poem for them to give to their loved ones. She eventually started reading her poetry at different venues. I would go to watch her and, over time, I fell in love with poetry and what was then the beginning of the art form known now as spoken word.

Long before I was old enough or could afford to travel, I visited the world by embracing what they ate. Because I geek the library, I learned to geek cooking and then to geek the world's great civilizations.

susangeeksclassicmovies
My name is Susan and I geek classic movies. I have wonderful memories of my mother and I, glued to the screen, watching some of the greatest movies. Our favorites featured such cinematic giants as Errol Flynn, Vivien Leigh, Robert Taylor, Tyrone Power, Myrna Loy and so many others. My mother filled me in on all of the artists’ stories—gossip and scandals included—and I felt as if really knew these legends.
My public library has a wonderful selection of classic movies that I regularly check out and watch with my own children, sharing the same stories that I heard long ago. My library also has a great selection of biographies, so I can learn even more about the actors and actresses from my favorite movie era.

kerolgeeksinformation
My name is Kerol and I geek information. I work in a public library and I geek helping people find what I call information nuggets...those little facts that exist in the library, but hide in the recesses of the intimidating reference section. I geek things like 'how many vice presidents have been elected president?' or 'what Native American tribes were located in Louisiana in the mid 1800s?'

cliffgeekscrafts
My name is Cliff and I geek crafts. I love learning how things are made and trying to make them myself. I check out books from the library on papermaking, bookbinding, sewing, knitting, crocheting, woodworking, woodcarving, gardening, cooking and a variety of other crafts. Without the books from the library, I would have no chance of exploring crafts. Thanks for making all this information free!

kristellegeeksbooks
As a child I moved around a lot and I would reread all my favorite books to help me feel at home whenever I got to somewhere new. Now as an adult, I read all the time and love hearing a good story.

alvingeeksthelibrary
My name is Alvin and I geek the library. As a child, the library became the place that stimulated my imagination and fueled my passion for lifelong learning. This drive was instilled by my mother, who sadly passed away almost a year ago. Even though she is physically no longer here, the thirst for knowledge she gave lives on. In fact, I now make my living by working in the very same library I used as a child.

altongeekscoaching
My name is Alton and I geek coaching. They say it’s just a game. Your mind is helping you believe that, but your heart is beating to win. A coach’s pride is in the guidance of his team, each success being a new stripe. And that only makes me want to continue to get better.
Every new season of fresh cut grass and painted lines, I strive to be better than I was the season before. And a coach who doesn’t improve will find themselves sliding to the wolves. Did I say wolves? Yes, I did. There is always another coach wanting to climb the hill you’re climbing and he will bring wolves to catch you. Not ordinary wolves, but trained wolves with his purpose on their minds.
The library lets me dig into the past of great coaches, learn from them and use it to guide me, as I guide my team. Every good coach has been guided. What really makes the difference is from where and whom you get your information.

conigeeksknitting
My name is Coni and I geek knitting. When I was in sixth grade my mom taught me how to knit. Even though that was a long time ago, and not so unusual in itself, my mom is left-handed and I am right-handed. So, I learned to knit left-handed. And when I knit, all the patterns are backward and my stitches lean to the left!
It’s not surprising that I stick to very simple projects: a soft shawl for someone in a nursing home or a warm hat for a soldier in Afghanistan. And while I relax and knit, I think good thoughts for whoever may receive the shawl or hat. That makes me feel good.
My library provided me with a wonderful collection of books with beautiful pictures of colorful shawls and easy to follow patterns. It gave me new ideas and lots of inspiration. It also supplied me with the address of the local USO who encouraged me to keep knitting and assured me that my hats would go to a good home.
So even though my stitches are backwards and slant in a different direction, the library kept me straight on the path to making myself feel good about being a geek about knitting!
