Libraries Transform Lives

Libraries provide opportunities for anyone to gain knowledge—without judgment. Access to library resources and services change lives on a daily basis.

"…there are also moments when a book can save our life. I remember listening to a new author talk about what had been a very oppressive childhood that by the time she was 13 had lead to a deep sense of hopelessness till the day she found a book at her small local library. The novel had a protagonist that mirrored her experience and for the first time in her young life she realized she wasn’t alone and there were choices to be made. It changed everything and opened up her limited vision beyond the stifling neighborhood where she lived."

I have never thought I would find a job so perfectly suited for my geekness. I'm a youth services librarian in a small rural library. I get to read books to children, do fun crafts, sing songs, do silly rhymes, perform finger-plays, play with puppets, talk with kids of all ages, play video games, dress up, take the teens to lunch, watch movies, go to the swimming pool, recommend books, and just share my knowledge and gain knowledge from those around me. It's a geek-worthy job and when my Zoology knowledge comes in handy it makes me geek-happy! What more could this scientist geek turned librarian geek want?

Fight for Public Libraries

Communities across the country are cutting back on library budgets. According to Marilyn Johnson, author of This Book Is Overdue!, in a recent Los Angeles Times article, the affect of these actions could run much deeper than a simple loss of service. “Those in cities that haven't preserved their libraries, those less fortunate and baffled by technology, and our children will be the first to suffer. But sooner or later, we'll all feel the loss as one of the most effective levelers of privilege and avenues of reinvention—one of the great engines of democracy—begins to disappear.”

School Librarians Get into the Act

School Librarian Geeks the Campaign

Geek the Library is designed to build awareness about the immense value of public libraries and the critical funding needs many face. It is about inviting the community to be part of the campaign, so the public can spread the word and continue to heighten awareness. And while we were confident that Geek the Library could add value outside of the library, we have been amazed by the interest and the level of support within our pilot communities and around the country. One fantastic example comes from New Jersey, a state struggling with significant public library budget cuts.

Amy King, a teacher librarian with Medford Township Schools in Burlington County New Jersey, saw a mention of Geek the Library on a tweet by Buffy Hamilton, another school librarian supporter in Georgia. She immediately saw an opportunity and hatched a plan to use the concept to encourage interest in the school library at Milton H. Allen Elementary.

“I wanted a hook to bring people into the library,” says King. “I needed something that would work for all of our patrons, not only students, but also staff and parents. The ‘geek’ part was the answer. Everyone has something that they are passionate about. If we could show that the libraries had resources to fuel that passion, then we would ‘hook’ them!”

King worked to gain the support of school staff by handing out geek-themed goody bags at the beginning of the year and using geekthelibrary.org to explain the ‘geek’ theme at the first faculty meeting. Staff embraced it and enthusiastically shared what they geeked to help encourage students to do the same. The resulting digital slideshow was displayed on the school’s Web site and, eventually, on a stand-alone Geek the Library Web site created by King.

For students, the first few weeks were spent defining geek, viewing what their teachers’ geeked and creating geek signs to decorate the library, said King, who was often seen wearing an ‘I geek MHA’ t-shirt. Throughout the rest of the year, the theme was used as a starting point for many lessons, and integrated into other events and activities. The kids loved it and, according to King, it encouraged interest in the library and served as inspiration for them to learn more about what they geek.

“Our goal was to promote the wonderful learning experiences and resources our library has to offer. With the Geek the Library awareness campaign, we had common language surrounding the library for the parents, staff and students. And we wanted a strong visual that would capture people’s attention and draw them to the library.”

Part of the draw of knitting is that you can make almost anything once you learn. It's not hard to learn. There are only two stitches involved in knitting and the only tools that you really need are two sticks and some string. Once you learn, you can make blankets, rugs, headbands, sweaters, bags or socks. And these items can last for years. But there's the reality that you can make something from a single length of yarn that takes hours to create and, if you want, you could unravel an item just by untying a single knot.

It's the dual nature of knitting, complex and simple, sturdy and ephemeral, that makes it so fascinating and drives me to find out more about what other knitters make, how they make it, as well as the history of how knitting was created, used, and sustained by our ancestors.

Focus on the Silver Lining

The annual State of America’s Libraries Report, released this week by the American Library Association, confirms that public library usage is still on the rise, while library budgets are either stagnant or declining. As a result, libraries are being continually challenged to provide more with less, and to be creative in how they move forward. While we agree that this outlook is not ideal, we must all see the silver lining. For example, the fact that Americans are discovering or rediscovering their local library is a great thing. Also, since public libraries are on the front lines of recession recovery by helping people get back to work and reeducate themselves, community leaders may gain more insight into the immense value of libraries.

My name is Laura and I geek civic engagement and writing. In addition to being a reference librarian I also have the task of providing programs for adults at our Central Library. As a member of Iowa Partners in Learning, a volunteer coalition which supports public deliberation in Iowa, I have had the opportunity to have National Issues Forums at the Central Library. One was on democracy and another on the healthcare system in which we partnered with the Hoover Presidential Library. In October 2008, I was a co-presenter at the NCDD (National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation) conference in Austin, Texas. Our presentation was on the importance of libraries in promoting civic engagement in our communities. This event generated interest from all over the United States.

Libraries are not just for books. They have become an important social aspect in our communities. When someone loses a job, they don’t have the money to pay for Internet service. The library is where many people are turning for job seeking online.

Not everyone is a reader. The library provides a wide variety of audio books. One of the programs I started at the library in collaboration with the Drake University Adult Literacy Center is called, “Literacy in a Different Way.” We bring readers and non-readers together to talk about books that may also be available as audio books. The idea is to encourage an interest in literature regardless of the format. One new reader was so excited she checked out the large print book and the unabridged audio book and followed along to help improve her reading skills. Working in a library is also a great atmosphere for someone who geeks learning. Another program that has attracted many people from the community is a free writers’ workshop which meets once a month. We average about 15-20 members each month. You could say I also geek being a librarian.

During World War II my family of six lived in three rooms over a tavern across the street from the old Center Street Library. My mom was happy when I spent an hour or two there. It thinned the crowd.

Our librarian was a small woman who, for some reason, took an interest in me. (Give me a minute and I'll come up with her name. It starts with 'H.') When I got old enough to be an aide, I took it, but I failed the Dewey Decimal System test. Embarrassed? Well, yeah ... But my librarian loved me anyway. She never said a word.

I always make friends with my library's librarians. I've known quite a few. I will sit at his desk and yack or stand in the stacks and yack. (Don't tell the boss librarian).

My librarians and I talk philosophy, family, weather, but mostly books. One librarian told me he likes works comprised of complex sentences. We used to talk Strunk and White.

I like biographies that tell the tales of people who have transcended lousy childhoods. Oddly, I recommend more books to my librarians than the other way around. I don't recall any librarian who actually took my recommendation even though they took pains to write the title down. It might be the lousy childhood thing. But then who am I to say.

jakegeeksbeatprose&poetry

When I was 13, I saw an episode of Freaks and Geeks where Lindsay and the slackers were assigned On the Road for their English class. The controversy caused by the book's subject matter alternative/outsider idealism and drug use during the episode led me to immediately go out and steal a copy. I was young then, and would never do such a thing now.

I read it cover to cover in three days, and would have finished sooner had the book not been taken away from me from the first day forth for reading during school hours, after being found hiding out in the bathroom for an hour desperately trying to finish part one of the book.

After that, I began going to my local library, where aside from Kerouac, I discovered Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gregory Corso, William Carlos Williams, Richard Brautigan, Robert Creeley, and outsiders Leonard Cohen and Charles Bukowski. As well as my personal favorite, William S. Burroughs, whose complete published works I have read and now own. I still remember reading Naked Lunch in one day on a Saturday from 10 a.m. until right before close at Zablocki Library in Milwaukee.

It was only a few weeks later that I rode the bus by myself to the Milwaukee Art Museum, somewhere my parents or public school failed to take me. But ‘I had to see what these guys were talking about.’ I remember telling my mother who was furious and worried sick, but looking back I know I had made her proud because I was beginning to educate myself about things my parents were never taught or exposed to. In the end, my parents not only didn't ground me, but discussed with me the things I had seen during my 'big day out,' which was only the beginning of the travels that lay ahead of me, and which reaffirmed the wanderlust I had already begun to feel while reading On the Road in that old Catholic School toilet stall.

The Beats and their collective bodies of work have shaped my life in more ways than I could ever imagine, expanding my tastes in music, art, film and philosophy. And without the library to inspire me to be something greater and cultivate my passions, sensitivities, and eccentricities, I may have fallen prey to the negative lifestyles of my peers, and maintained the ignorance which has been a primary source in their failures to rise above their means, the hateful kind of ignorance which I can still sadly hear not only in their voices today, but now the voices of their children. However, they are still young, and I can tell already much wiser that my peers and I at that age. I just hope they are able to find their own passions, as I did, and learn while they are young that you will only get done what you do for yourself.

Computers and Community

Demand for public library computers is on the rise. Most libraries have continuous waiting lists and strict time limits to accommodate the growing number of regular computer users. According to a recent report conducted by the University of Washington Information School, a third of Americans (about 77 million people) used public library computers last year to find a job, better themselves in some way or connect with their community. That means when libraries cut hours or can’t afford to maintain their computer offerings, many people are left without their only access to information and services that empower their overall well-being.

Public libraries are a vital community asset. Join the public library funding discussion where you live. Your voice can make a difference.

Geek State of Mind

At Downtown School in Des Moines, Iowa, learning about the library is serious business. After spending time discussing how libraries work, visiting a local library, creating individual presentations and designing their own classroom library, students in a combined second and third grade class were asked to draw a picture about the library.

What made the biggest impression on these young minds? Was it the microfiche machine, Dewey Decimal or free public computers? Without any prompting, many of the children—including seven-year-old James Konfrst pictured above—created unique ‘I geek’ pictures! A new generation of young people who understand that whatever you geek, the public library supports it all … we geek it!

Scouts Geek the Library in Iowa

If you run into helpful Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts in central Iowa this year, you may notice them wearing customized Geek the Library gear. Thanks to Stephanie Fournier, Troop 79 Brownie Leader for the Roland-Story Service Unit of the Girl Scouts, the ‘I geek scouting’ sweatshirt is now an apparel option for many Story City, Iowa, scouts when their official uniform isn’t necessary.

The public awareness campaign resonates with kids and adults, and the sweatshirt is a fantastic alternative for participants, noted Fournier. “We are wearing the sweatshirts when we do troop or pack activities that don’t require formal dress uniforms or Class A uniforms, such as community service, some troop or den meetings, and other lower key get-togethers.”

What’s more, the young Geek the Library fans are also helping spread the word when they wear the sweatshirts. According to Fournier, they are all able to explain what they geek and how to find out more about the awareness campaign at local libraries.

Our local library system has 10 branches and only the economy of the last year has stopped us from continuous expansion. We have opera chorus and chamber music and little kid recitals, art clubs, and many author visits with snacks. We have a committed director and a swell staff.

olingeekslife

Well, I have so many interests that I can be obessive about. It just all depends on the kind of mood I am in or a lot of the time it changes throughout the year. When it comes to the traditional 'geek,' I learned to troubleshoot and put computers together at a young age, ordering parts and assembling, etc. Also, I am very passionate about politics, history and I care a great deal about the outdoors. Studying environmental science and chemistry is a passion, and going camping and snowboarding/skateboarding is another.

When it comes to popular culture today, my brother and I watch more movies than what is probably healthy. Our group of friends also geek out bad on certain shows, mostly stick to the history channel and discovery, but also a lot of sports. Then other shows like Dexter and The Tonight Show mix in some the Daily Show and South Park , but nothing beats three-hour specials about Nostradamus ... lol. Cars is another big interest after spending a lot of time in Ft. Dodge for school as there wasn’t much else to do or talk about. Barrett-Jackson just had their yearly Scottsdale auto auction, that was a fun week.

Uh, maybe geeking life is a good statement? Sci-movies are probably my biggest passion and I'm getting a research paper going. Movies like Star Wars, A.I., Bladerunner, Donnie Darko and countless others all have solid storylines with background information that came from somewhere. Dismal Public Library Budget News

Public libraries are hurting. According to Library Journal’s annual budget survey, dollars for materials is down, more than 40 percent of libraries have frozen salaries and reduced staff, and very few libraries are upbeat about their financial future. There are some bright spots, but generally libraries are cutting where they can to maintain core services and hours. It’s up to you to reverse this trend. Read the full article from Library Journal.

Des Moines Family Geeks Christmas

Since launching the campaign in June, the Geek the Library team has crunched numbers, visited pilot libraries and wondered if our efforts are really making an impact. But no statistic could match our excitement to see the Geek the Library-themed Christmas card created by the Wills-Cross family in Des Moines, Iowa. They saw the campaign, understood it, got excited about it and wanted to continue to spread the word.

It is tradition, says Harold Cross, that the family creates an eclectic card for the holidays. This year’s card, which features all six members of the family and what they geek, was inspired by the look and feel of Geek the Library’s ad campaign in Des Moines. Lou Reed’s ‘I geek art’ first caught the attention of this creative family—who were then pleasantly surprised by the full awareness campaign and important public library funding message.

“As I’ve grown and matured,” notes Harold, “I keep gaining more appreciation for passion and how it can impact one’s life. Life is too short and precious to toil away at something without passion. To be successful, to be happy, to be responsible, to achieve something, you have to care, you have to have passion for it.”

While the card is light-hearted and fun, the Cross family is serious about the critical value of public libraries and understands their role in making sure adequate funding is available. Harold believes the public library is an important cultural cornerstone in any community and supporting it is critical—even if you are not a regular library user. “It is a very valuable resource for those who need it,” he says, “and, at some point, we all need it.”

Harold and his wife Kim both remember going to the library as children. “We both took our own children to libraries here in Des Moines when they were younger. Someday we’ll take our grandchildren. Libraries have a long-lasting impact on children. There is something special about a library—the peacefulness, the helpfulness, the structure and organization, the sheer vast amount of knowledge it contains.”

The Geek the Library team would like to thank the entire Wills-Cross family for their efforts and for supporting the campaign. We geek creative families!

Have you seen the card? Take a look.

Educators Value Geek the Library

The pilot awareness campaign has garnered much attention since our launch in June 2009—even beyond the participating libraries. One exciting development is the adoption of the Geek the Library concept within schools. Educators have found the awareness campaign helpful in bridging the gap between motivating students to use the library for school, and using it to grow and get inspired.

Jaime McGrath, an educator at Gould Elementary School in Savannah, Georgia, has used Geek the Library to put a positive spin on encouraging more students to pick up non-fiction books. Elementary school students, explains McGrath, are notorious for avoiding them.

“We discuss in class the things they are interested in,” notes McGrath, “and then they search the library for those subjects. They become excited about getting what they geek and see the non-fiction section of the library no longer as a burden to shoulder, but as fuel for their personal interests.”

Asking students to ‘get what they geek’ may seem simple, but it really works, says McGrath. Rifling through his students’ desks after school one day, he found books on motocross, fossils, minerals and math concepts—all books students had picked out themselves. “The approach empowers students by putting them in charge of their own library selection decisions. All of my students have discovered new interests they can mine further in the library stacks.”

In addition to broadening their literary horizons, McGrath feels a positive relationship with the library now is important for the future of public libraries. “Children who understand that the library is an invaluable resource to explore their personal needs and interests will grow to be adults who rightly support full funding and expanded access to library materials,” says McGrath.

“Libraries look very different today than when I was a child in the 70’s, and we can only imagine what libraries will be like when these children are voting, running for office and bringing their children to the library. Seeing libraries as a personal asset as children, will encourage enthusiastic support for libraries as these children grow up.”

Before I was three, I was interested in short books, and I have since devoured every book with a story I can lay my hands on, from graphic novels to full blown, encyclopedia-sized book series. I even have started to write my own novel. I'm mostly into sci-fi and fantasy, but a few realistic/historic fiction novels that have come my way have been pretty good.

However, I tend to stay away from 'realistic' highschool fiction, because I get enough real life drama from the few times I have to watch TV. I also pick certain authors, such as Cornelia Funke or Terry Goodkind, because they have such a captivating writing style. Well, this obviously has to do with the library. I don't know what I'd ever do if I couldn't go to the library. Actually, yes I do. Libraries Cope With Shrinking Budgets

As record numbers of people head to public libraries this winter, library budgets are being cut all across the country. The dilemma isn’t a new one—public libraries set trends for thrifty, yet productive, institutions—but it is being compounded by a lackluster economy and more people looking for job-searching support. To cope, many libraries are taking unprecedented steps to maintain core services. Libraries, such as Geek the Library participant Des Moines Public Library in Des Moines, Iowa, are temporarily closing their doors and furloughing staff to ensure patrons can count on key services in the months ahead.

I just had an older brother who was really into music, plus my mom and dad enjoyed music quite a bit, too. My older brother introduced me to classic and southern rock and later punk rock. But those eventually were not enough to quench my thirst and now I listen to at least a little of everything.

My favorite types are still alternative, punk, 70s and 80s, but I listen to big band/swing, musicals, oldies, soul, classic rock, southern rock, new wave, synth pop, reggae, folk, bluegrass, cajun/zydeco, celtic, african, world music, electronica, soundtracks/movie scores and a couple I probabIy forgot to mention!

Libraries Promote Lifelong Literacy

Taking part in the Savannah Children’s Book Festival in Savannah, Georgia, got us thinking about just how important public libraries are for young people. Libraries promote access to early literacy learning and all of the benefits good reading skills can bring.

Even if you don’t have kids, supporting the library’s role in improving literacy rates, also supports your community. Illiteracy creates barriers to educational and employment opportunities, and has been linked to delinquency and crime. Public libraries are on the front lines. And they can’t do their very important jobs without your support. Get tips about what you can do.

The American Library Association (ALA) recently filed testimony to Congress about libraries and literacy. Take a look.

crystalgeekstheoutdoors

My parents kind of got me into the outdoors. I spend most of my time outside. If there was nothing to do, you’re more than likely to find me outside. I think the thing that I like about it is all the different colors and different things to see, and it’s entertaining. I think the outside is so beautiful. I would rather be outside then inside even if it’s cold or hot.

The outdoors effects my life because it’s practically my life. I’m outside almost every day and it irritates me on the days I can’t go outside. If I had to be stuck inside for a couple of days, I think I would go crazy.

In the future, I can see myself having a job that has to do with the outdoors, maybe taking pictures of the beautiful things of the outdoors. I think it would make me happy and I would really enjoy it. The best thing about the outdoors is sometimes its peaceful, and you can make the outdoors whatever you want with your imagination.

dehkonteegeekssongwriting

I geek songwriting. I love music. I like almost any kind of music with good lyrics and beats, that’s why I started to write my own songs when I was in the 7th grade. I have a journal of songs that I write and I try to think of the music that would go with the lyrics I write. But sometimes it’s very hard to do because I don’t know how to play any instruments and it`s very hard to imagine music when you don’t hear anything. That`s why I want to learn how to play the piano and guitar, so writing music would be much easier. That way I can come up with different tones and then I can write lyrics to them.

There are many singers and songwriters I like, but one of my favorite singer and songwriters is Beyoncé. She been one of my favorite artists for a very long time now, since I was in the third grade. The reason she's my favorite songwriter is because I like her music and the lyrics in her songs. Her songs are really inspiring and they make me want to write my own songs and music. I know most of her songs and she was one of the people that inspired me to start writing songs and making my own music.

One of my dreams is to become a singer or songwriter in the future so I can show people what I can do. The thing is, I don’t like performing my songs even though I know how to sing. It’s just that I get very shy in front of people when it comes to singing and then I forget the words I was going to say. And sometimes I don’t think that my music is that good, so I don’t want to perform it when people ask me to. That’s why I don’t know if I’m going to be a songwriter or singer in the future because I want to sing the songs that I write, but how am I going to do that when I get shy all the time when I want to sing and I don’t think my songs are good?

In any case, if I don’t get to sing my own songs I can become a producer and sell my songs to artist who want to buy them.

melvingeekshiphop

I geek hip hop. I started hip hop back when I was five years old. I really didn’t like it at first, but when I saw the people spin on their hands and heads it seemed pretty cool to do. I was impressed by the smoothness as they spun, so I started to dance.

At first I couldn’t really dance, all I would do was the running man and the robot. Now I start to spend more times with my cousin because we go to parties and we compete with other kids. We are always dancing. If it’s not at parties, it’s at downtown tournaments. We are always trying to make new moves and try to get better at head and hand spins so that one day we could have our very own dance crew and work with an artist.

One day we could be like the jabawakeeys and win dance battles and money. When I grow up, I want to be the person they call when they need a crew to dance in the back ground.

I geek music because it helped me in life. It helped me because I was going through a tough time and it was the thing I turned to. I love music because it’s a different and fun way to send a message. Another reason I love it is because it’s another form of art and a way to express yourself.

I mostly listen to punk, pogo punk, grunge, alternative, rock and classic rock. Some of my favorite bands are Tyborn Jig , Sum41, Blink 182, Dropkick Murphys, Nirvana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Led Zeppelin, The clash, Rancid, Nightmare of You, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, Pennywise, NOFX, Bowling For Soup and a lot more!! I don’t really have a music idol, but one of my favorite people from the bands listed above would be my uncle who is the vocalist for Tyborn Jig.

I use it almost every day. I come home and listen to it while I’m doing homework, cleaning. I listen to it when I do almost anything. I am hoping to use music in the future by becoming a music producer and owning my own record company. I would love to have that job and help garage bands become known as the next big thing. The interesting thing about elephants is that they can weigh more than 13,000 lbs. and can be 19-24 feet long. An interesting thing about monkeys is that their diet mostly consists of bananas and when they finish, they eat the peel! Some interesting things about pandas are that they are almost extinct and there are only about 1,000 of them left in the world!

Well, as you can see I love them, so I plan to be a veterinarian when I get older. The reason I want to be a vet and not a zookeeper is that I want to be able to help them when their sick and stuff like that. Animals make me happy, so just seeing one of them upset or sad makes me sick to my stomach. I also want to be someone who brings an end to animal abuse and animal testing.

Libraries Compete in Digital Age

Although some think that public libraries pose little value when information is so easily available via the Internet, the digital age has actually helped libraries. Never before have we had more information readily available, and never before has there been a greater need to figure out effective strategies to weed through and organize all of it to find what we need. So, not only are public libraries still relevant, but their futures are bright with possibilities. A recent article about the thriving St. Louis Public Library says, “Libraries that play their cards right find themselves moving into a new golden era.”

melissageeksscreenwriting

My lifelong dream is to be a screenwriter/director. One of my earliest memories is of me putting on my new dress, black patent leather shoes, and white gloves and going to see Annie with my foster parents. It was a magical experience full of fancy costumes, elaborate sets and wonderfully choreographed musical numbers. I remember thinking, 'Wow! All of this excitement over a little orphan-girl whom the rest of the world had forgotten about.'

I realized that in movies, the possibilities are endless. A man can have scissors for hands, a group of rag-tag kids can find a pirates treasure, a little boy and an alien can be best friends. Super powers, monsters, heroes, villains, magic, loving families, dysfunctional families, shrunken families, faraway lands, the house next door, talking animals, deadly animals, time travel, vampires, and vampire slayers…endless.

I love how the shortest scene, a few lines of dialogue, or a score of music, can stick with you and carry with it so much excitement, sadness, terror or intrigue. Whether discovering an unlikely hero in Whale Rider or Forgetting Sarah Marshall after a long day of teaching middle school, I am always up for a good movie. I think the only thing better than watching a great movie, would be creating one.

The Ultimate Community Service

Libraries and librarians provide the ultimate community service. In many areas, the loss of a public library could have devastating consequences—especially for young people. The value of our public libraries is difficult to put into words. But see how it is insightfully described in this opinion piece from the News Times in Oregon:

“Libraries don’t discriminate; they welcome everyone and give them time to forget their troubles or deal with their issues by reading an absorbing book, listening to an audiotape or CD, accessing the Internet or getting information with the help of the friendly reference librarian.

Libraries are ports in the storms of life. If we patronize and support them, they, along with loving parents and supportive teachers, can keep the young ones on the straight-and-narrow so they don’t become another statistic of the juvenile justice system.

The folks behind the desks checking books, presenting a story time or answering your reference questions are a kind of 'first responder.' It takes a village to raise a child; if libraries are able to do their job, the police officer will have an easier job. If kids are rapt over a book, they are less likely to end up with a rap sheet.”

Ever since I was a small child, I new that music was an amazing thing. My mom says I would spend hours on end as an infant listening to little nursery rhymes and playing with all my musical toys. I have been hooked on musicals since my grandma introduced them to me about 6 years ago. When she died last year, she left all her movies to me. Grease, The Music Man, Singing In the Rain, Hairspray... they're just some of my favorites.

In 5th grade, I joined band playing the flute and fell in love. I (now 13) have kept 1st chair ever since. I also took up piano lessons two years ago and my instructor is very impressed with my progress. I joined choir in 6th grade and am still favored as a leader of soprano by my instructor. I've been in every school musical with a solo. I cherish my voice very much. It is quite definately a gift from God. I've been given alot of complements about my singing and it makes me feel amazing.

I have recently found myself listening to music deeper than I ever have. I am a big fan of The Medic Droid. Their lyrics are really sincere and always get to me.They just make me think, 'Hey, this is what life is about, so we made a song about it.' Isn't that what it's all supposed to be about?

I can see myself sticking with music in the future. My mother has suggested becoming a professional floutist. I don't know if I would want to stick with that, but if all else fails, I can definately say that you will see me auditioning on American Idol or America's Got Talent. I want to share my love of music with the rest of the world. It's my passion. So watch out people, here I come.

New languages, new ways to do things, new reminders of things I might have forgotten or taken for granted.

My grandchildren remind me to go slow and enjoy life. A woman I meet at the corner bodega reminds me of how grateful I am to be able to take the next breath. My neighbor's dog reminds me of the unconditional love a dog has for its owner. I'm always reminded of things and always learning new things. I've always loved writing…whether it was poems, short stories, autobiographies, etc. I've flip-flopped back-and-forth between what I want to do when I graduate high school. First it was a forensic specialist, then a medical examiner, then a chemist, but, deep down, my love of writing made me think twice about what I truly wanted to be when I got older. Now, I've finally decided that writing will always be my past, present and future.

I will always love writing, because it's such a big part of me. I can't begin to explain the incredible feeling I get when I pick up my pencil and unlock the writer. On more than once occasion, I don't finish writing what I start. It's a creative process and although I like the idea, sometimes it just doesn't stick.

One day I hope to become a published author. I want to write young adult fiction. I am a senior in high school right now. I graduate in May 2010. It is a very scary thought that twelve, rather short, years are coming to an indefinite close, but knowing that my love of writing is guiding my way helps me know what is on the other side of the proverbial bridge. Film Illustrates Need for Local Support

Will life imitate art? That’s what residents of Highland Park, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, hope. A new low-budget movie that will document the closing and the struggle to reopen the Highland Park Public Library recently started filming on location. The movie, set to star Danny Glover and open in 2010, might just provide the publicity and additional funds the city needs to really reopen the library. The movie comes at a time when many public libraries across the country are closing for financial reasons and helps illustrate the importance of local support for public libraries.

jaydegeeksart

Ever since I was really little, I always loved to draw. I inherited this talent from my mom. She is wonderful. Of course being a little kid, I wasn't spectacular at it. But the talent was still there. I entered many art competitions. You know, the small ones they have for elementary school. Nothing special, just something to show off what I had. I won almost every time I entered. I was always very good for my age. Of course I know there were and are better people at it than me, but I never cared. I was just astounded that I carried this ability.

As I grew, many people had an interest in me. One in particular being Dell Seaman. He owned an art building called 'Artistic Hand' in Oviedo, Florida. He discovered me from one of those art competitions I had entered. People at the school I went to told me that he wanted to meet me. My mom and I drove down to the Artistic Hand to meet him. We weren’t exactly money healthy, so we were worried that I could not go to the lessons he taught. He was a very nice man. And he said he would mentor me and let me have lessons for free if I helped him clean his house/business. I agreed without hesitation. Dell had problems with his back and his health, so it was hard for him to do the simple cleaning that needed to be done. His wife was sick and she needed care from him, so I was more then willing to help him out. And not only because I was getting something in return, but simply because to help him out was a reward to me on its own.

I went to lessons there and cleaned for about a year. Then the tragic move happened. I cried for many days and dreaded having to say goodbye to my lifetime friends. I was scared that no one else out there would take the time to help me to pursue my talent. It was very hard to leave. I had lived there my whole life, but I had to suck it up and move on. We made our way to Virginia to live with my grandparents. I hated living in that house. It was so depressing there. Everything was so far away, and as a expected, there was not one soul there that knew what a great ability I had. No one stepped up to help me, so I had to do it on my own.

I got into drawing anime and cartoony things. I only ever draw in pencil, no color. Although people knew that I could draw well, they had no idea what I was capable of. I didn't even know. We lived there for about a year and then we moved once more, for the last time. And now here I am in Georgia. Moving here has opened my eyes, I have woken up. I am finally where I belong, I am happy

I live in Rincon, Georgia, in Effingham county. I am 14 years old and am an 8th grader at Ebeneser Middle School. Soon I will be going to Effingham County High School. My art teacher Mrs. Lott is the second person to step up and mentor me. I do most of my best work on my own, but she gives me helpful tips to work with. I am trying to expand my horizons. But the pencil is my companion. We are inseparable. I draw a variety of things, mostly from real life things, objects mostly. This is my second year living here and I hope there will be many more. I have been in the newspaper many times and hope to be famous one day. So, yes, I geek art, it's my passion. Forever.

Is that a Geek the Library poster I see? Part of the challenge for Geek the Library participating public libraries is to get the awareness campaign out into the community. Public Libraries Pay Big Dividends

Canadian and U.S. public libraries have something in common: usage is up. But while many American libraries wonder if funding woes will mean drastic—and permanent—changes to resources, hours and staff, Canadian libraries are looking to the future. Charles Schulz knew how to portray the common trials and tribulations of everyday life through the mouths of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Peppermint Patty, Schroeder, Rerun, Sally and Snoopy's thought balloons. Using a minimalist style in his drawing coupled with thorough research, Mr. Schulz changed the face and style of cartooning. He was and is someone we could all learn something from.

In fact, he gladly mentored any of the younger cartoonist who so desired. He was held in such high esteem by his colleagues that he won two Reubens (the Oscar of the cartooning field). Additionally, one Sunday in May 2000 most every cartoonist paid tribute in his/her Sunday 'funnies' by incorporating Mr. Schulz or one his characters in their cartoon.

Positive Return on Investment

Public libraries provide tremendous value for individuals, for neighborhoods, for cities, for states and for our country. Beyond the resources they provide, they can affect positive trends such as higher property values, lower crime rates and literacy improvements. But for cash-strapped communities, it’s hard to make the connection between cutting library funding and what that really means for the surrounding communities. So, what is the true return on investment (ROI) for libraries?

According to a report from the Oslo University College in Oslo, Norway, investing in libraries makes sense. The report analyzed over 30 studies focused on library ROI and found that for every taxpayer dollar invested in public libraries, there is an average four-to-five time return for citizens. The study also indicates that connecting dollars and cents to the library helps people understand the true value.

As libraries across the country are facing difficult funding scenarios such as closing one, two or all branches, or cutting hours and staff, we want to encourage you to take preventative measures in your community. Talk to friends and colleagues about your public library not just in terms of resources such as books and computers, but also the tangible return on investment that is possible for both individuals and communities.

Community Technology Centers

Public libraries are fast becoming technology hubs for people who do not own computers or have access to the Internet, says a new report. And, as job applications and government resources head online, more and more Americans are heading to their public library. Unfortunately, funding is not keeping pace with demand.

Findings from the study include:

-More than 90 percent of public libraries provide technology training such as online job-seeking and career-related classes, general Internet and computer use instruction

-76 percent of public libraries offer free wireless access

-81 percent of public libraries report there are not enough public Internet computers to meet patron demand some or all of the time

-Increasingly libraries are having trouble replacing outdated computer workstations due to cost

Major U.S. City May Lose Libraries

In the coming months a major U.S. city may be without a public library. On October 2, every Free Library of Philadelphia building—over 50—is set to close for good leaving patrons without access to critical programs, information and services. Philadelphia is one of the largest library systems in the country and has over six million visits annually. This is a major example of how public libraries are not a given. Geek the Library Making an Impact

Geeking the Library @ The Unquiet Library

Part of our mission, once we complete our pilot awareness campaign, is to evaluate whether or not we’ve made an impact. And while we have months to go, we’re delighted to report that we already are! Stories from communities in and around our participating libraries, as well as across the country, are coming in about how libraries are adopting elements of the campaign.

One example comes from Creekview High School in Canton, Georgia. Buffy Hamilton, a tech-savvy high school librarian, has adopted the campaign with open arms. Hamilton wants to inspire her patrons—the students—to talk about what they geek, as well as take a new look at how the library can support them and their interests. In addition to creating and distributing custom ‘I geek’ stickers of the library’s brand, The Unquiet Library, she also wanted to recreate the Geek Wall experience. So, with black construction paper and silver markers, her library has taken on new life. Student upon student, she explains, continue to volunteer to showcase their passions in this simple, but significant way.

In addition to celebrating people’s passions, notes Hamilton, the campaign also provides a critical lesson about the value of all libraries and how each person plays a role in supporting them. But if the positive initial response to her efforts wasn’t telling, she says, she recently got full confirmation that the campaign’s personal approach works. “Some ninth-grade football players came in to see if they could take part. Football players! And they came to us.”

The display has been so successful, she says, plans are in the works to help students create custom photos, and perhaps, videos. Reminding the public just how relevant libraries still are and that they offer something for everyone, she continues, can have tremendous impact well beyond the walls of the library. “Geek the Library is a positive movement for all libraries. This kind of advocacy helps all of us.”

Or have you ever seen the way the a thin layer of sand in an hourglass gets stuck on the walls as the rest of the sand dissolves its way from the top to the bottom? And a single light tap on the hourglass compels a few kernels of sand to begin to fall—each causing two below it to tumble on downward, and downward, and downward in a small avalanche, creating a triangle of negative space in its path?

Future Outlook: Long and Strong

From time-to-time we hear about people predicting that public libraries will become obsolete or extinct in the future—even with usage statistics continually telling another story. We asked our Facebook fans why they think public libraries WON’T become obsolete in the future. Here are some sample responses:

“Libraries are one of society's last great equalizers. They bring communities together and enrich them at the same time. They're too important to allow for their obsolescence.”

“Libraries are not big warehouses of the latest format of media...they are places where people connect other people with information, stories, knowledge, etc. So, as long as people don't become obsolete (knock on wood...ha, ha)...public libraries will always have a place.”

“The library is one of the last remaining public spaces where people can spend time without buying anything. I think people miss community more than they realize and the mall is a very poor substitute. Libraries are (or need to be) community centers with something for everyone.”

“Libraries have the power to become the ‘third place,’ the equivalent of what diners used to be. Coffee shops may serve the same purpose, but with the economy the way it is, and the lack of funding in schools for things like art, more and more families and individuals will turn to their local libraries for learning and social interaction.”

camellageeksanime&manga

When my one of my friends made me watch an episode of Inuyasha, I thought I wouldn't like it, but it's five years later and I am still hooked on anime. I don't watch Inuyasha anymore, but anime like Code Geass, Skip Beat and others. Every time I go to the library, I go to the section with manga and see if they have any new adventures to read.

angelageeksbubbles

When bubbles are in my airspace, I feel like I'm floating, flying, weightless. They make me aware of the air movement or lack of it. Bubbles are a miracle of physics. All the colors are there, alive and moving, tickling my skin...I blink and they're gone! Bubbles make my space a happy place! Bubbles don't last long enough to take for granted.

I must live in the present moment to catch every delicate glimmer. Bubbles make me want to share the experience and the beauty with others and see their delight! The children's department of the library have a very good book on bubbles.

Public Libraries Got Game

Many public libraries are embracing gaming as a way to engage young patrons, and are both checking out and archiving video games. This is just one example of how merging traditional services with new trends can be a winning combination for libraries, and add value to an already invaluable institution.

Take a look.

stevegeeksbook&paperart

I geek book and paper art because books and paper are still the best way to preserve and carry accumulated knowledge and culture from age to age. Without books and paper, electronics and computers would never have been invented. I marvel constantly at the different way books can be made, marked and transformed.

Trendsetting Green Libraries

Using your public library has more benefits than you think. It’s the place to go if you are going green. Of course borrowing vs. buying books is good for the environment, but many libraries are also making efforts to evolve into more environmentally conscious institutions. Here’s one example in southern Georgia where we have many participating libraries.
