Since I was a child, I would reach for books with stories from different cultures—collections of tales about heroes and heroines, folklore, fables and myths. I went through a stage of obsessing over Greek mythology. I poured through the Greek myth books at my school and city libraries whenever I could. I became quite an 'expert' at the age of 10.
This paid off years later when all hope hinged on me in a team game of Trivial Pursuit. Deep within the cells of my brain lay dormant the answer to: Who was the mortal who stole fire from Mt. Olympus? After an initial freak-out moment, I blurted: Prometheus. I was a hero that day thanks, in part, to my local libraries! Today, I'm an author/illustrator whose first book is a folk tale about a mountain on the island Kaua'i.
