I grew up in a small mining community, over six hours drive from the nearest city. As a result, when I started to realise I was gay, the library was my life line, in finding out more, and later, connecting with the gay and lesbian community. The library was the only place in town I could go. We had no gay bar, no support group, no resources in schools. Not only did the library provide me with gay and lesbian books, novels and movies, but its Internet access meant I could look at queer-themed Web sites, without fear that my parents would look at what I was doing on my shared family PC at home.
Now I am half way through my library degree, and and I seem to have begun something of a crusade to educate both libraries and their users about how libraries have the potential to be a queer-friendly place, and how libraries can help cater for the gay and lesbian community.
